"La Sautillante", a rare dance movement from Marin Marais, followed by its Double (essentially a variation), from his Pièces de viole, Livre IV. I open with a brief improvisation since it is so short. 0:00 Improvisation 1:37 La Sautillante 2:02 Double

Marais - Musette I & II
Переглядів 30428 днів тому
This is my second arrangement from Marin Marais' "Pièces de viole" following "Les Voix Humaines" that I posted here a few months ago. The Musette form is after the "Musette de cour", an ancient bagpipe instrument. The piece was originally published in 1717, here played on my 1690 Francesco Ruggieri cello. The score for my arrangement can be found here: www.gabrielmartinscello.com/press
Schumann - Faschingsschwank aus Wien, II. Romanze (arr. for cello)
Переглядів 429Місяць тому
My first arrangement of one of Schumann's solo piano works. This comes from his "Carnival Scenes from Vienna", Op. 26. The complete work consists mostly of lively, virtuosic movements, but hidden in its midst is this incredibly poignant and sad "Romanze". I felt that it fit the sonority of the cello perfectly. The score is freely available for download, so you can try it out yourself if you are...

Kodály - Sonata for Solo Cello, Op. 8, I. Allegro maestoso ma appassionato
Переглядів 356Місяць тому
Arguably the greatest solo cello work after the Bach Suites, Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály wrote this Sonata in 1915. It was later championed by legendary Hungarian cellist János Starker.
Franchomme - Caprice No. 9 in B Minor, Op. 7
Переглядів 1,9 тис.Місяць тому
French cellist Auguste Franchomme (1808-1884) was a leading musician and teacher of his time. He was the dedicatee of Chopin's Cello Sonata. In a 1856 review, the Weekly Chronicle and Register wrote that he "carefully abstains from all abuse of the tremolo and of the exaggerated expression, which are the distinguishing features in most modern violoncello playing." I wonder what they would have ...

Alfredo Piatti (1822-1901) was one of the most important cellists of his generation, being connected with Liszt, Mendelssohn, and the Schumanns. His 12 Caprices are often compared to Paganini's famous 24 for violin. This one is titled "Andante Religioso". Elgar Cello Concerto (Martins, Schubert, DSO)
That ope C string gets me every time - superb maestro.
Amazing!! I’m just now learning this song. The sound quality is super nice.
Lovely playing 👍 I see that you are playing an old cello, do you go to the luthier often to tweak the set up? Is it stable throughout the year? I recently got an expensive old French cello, it changes a little from day to day…
Thanks! I do the majority of repairs/setup myself. I find with stable humidity and temperature there aren’t too many issues. Low tension strings also help
Hi can you make a video talking about how did you get your cello? It sounds amazing
Most wonderful. It would be nice to also hear your interpretation of the 11 Capricci by Joseph dall’Abaco, especially the first one :)
Thank you! Will consider it
An unjustly neglected major work, phenomenally well played by a young man who, I hope, also performs the slightly less neglected concerto and the Britten suites.
Certainly!
Definitely the best version I have ever listened to❤
Thank you!
Perfect ❤❤
standing ovation !!
Marvelous
Super helpful. Thanks you so much!!! Could you please talk more about listening music? What is the best way to listen in order to study music language?
Thanks Gabriel 😊 sempre utili i tuoi consigli grazie
Even if you know that you will never be "Great" if you recognise it in others that is most satisfying. It is hard to define but when it happens in your listening you know it. The late Richard Thew conducted the combine churches performance in Sydney every year in Sydney. We we came to the last chorus in the Messiah which commences with a crashing chord all sang "Worthy" - we had sung it many times but this time when we sang that one chord he put down his baton filled with emotion - he was overcome. That is what makes a great performance it overwhelms you. So true maestro you just know it instantly. If you can get that into your performance you have made a huge advancement in your musical career. Thanks for posting this maestro - so deep and true.
sorry, didn't enjoy it! BUT your Bach #4 is best!!!
Thanks for your feedback sir
To your first and important point about bringing soul to a piece, it occurred to me, while your were speaking, that we can try to imagine the composer sitting in front of us. To try, in some way, to connect with them, emotionally. This can be applied to any genre of music. If it’s Gypsy Jazz, imagine Django Reinhardt is in the room, or, if it’s Celtic music, imagine that there are dancers listening to you! This is just a way to be fully engaged with the music vs just an intellectual exercise!
This is a way of doing it. Some may also say that the composer is not important and that only your relation to the piece matter.
Wooow perfectly in tune....absolutely wonderful playing. Congratulations ❤❤
Gorgeous 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Hermoso!!! Muchas gracias por tan sentida y bella interpretación!!!
wonderful with the very hypnotic bagpipe like sustained repartition - Bravo Maestro.
Une si belle musique qu’on entend trop rarement et superbement jouée
This is brilliant, thanks for sharing !
Beautiful! ❤
Masterful arrangement and beautiful playing! I love that minor 9th chord that it opens on.
Hypnotic and extremely beautiful.
What a beautiful piece! Thank you very much for all your great performance. Precious channel for cello lovers!
Please notify us when you release your new album. I would love to listen all the time.
Bravo! Love yet another self-accompanied arrangement/piece from you.
Thank you for sharing this with the world, Gabriel; it's beautiful. I've noticed you've been posting more videos recently and I'm loving every bit of it! Thanks again! 🙂
Beautiful. I would like to purchase this arrangement.
Thank you. It’s free, link in the description
Thank you very much😊
Thank you for this beautiful interpretation of one of the lesser appreciated suites. The Prelude especially is fantastic <3
Prelude correct, love it
A very difficult piece to play this well. It looks deceptively easy on paper but being a cellist myself I have learned otherwise. Your playing is very clean and full of emotion. Thank you for this performance. By the way, the cello that you are playing sounds wonderful, especially the lower range.
Playing with a drone app has also been immensely helpful! If set to B, for example, one can study all the keys and scales which contain a B! ( B major/minor, E major, G# minor, etc)
Any thoughts about de tuning the cello a little? Of course it depends on the reason for traveling ( performing, for example) . If I’m traveling for vacation, and…..the destination has a violin shop!), renting a cello at the destination might be more cost effective !) Your ideas are excellent and very well thought out!!!
Personally I never found de-tuning the instrument to be necessary. But that’s not to say it’s a bad idea.
Very good tips! Using strength to hear the resonance of the desired note and, rotating the wrist so that the pressure is squarely on the finger really help to ‘own the note’, vs just renting it! ( I’ve used the idea of ‘owning a note’, but the image of ‘just renting it’ is new!)
Just wow.
That is hard to play. Talent at full display.
Maybe its time for a change. Just because it was used for century doesn't mean its correct. You are working with harmony with your body and its shows with your explanation. very intelligent
That's so great 👏👏👏♥️
The most intimate rendition one can find. Left me (almost ;) ) speechless. Thank you so much!
Thank you!
omg. much appreciate
❤ My dear Athil you are a beautiful light in the world. God bless!
it's soo beautiful.. ❤
wow I didn't know about this piece and you made me want to play it thank you
You sound beautiful Gabriel, are you on Spotify?
Thank you. Yes I am!
My cello has a wolf note (close to F#).. I've noticed that tuning close to 442 produces a brighter sound, whereas tuning close to 432 produces an in general more opaque sound..
Very well said🎉
Very thoughtful and excellent video. Suggestion for a future video: chronic & unconscious portato in slurred legato playing. When/why portato should be used and when/why it shouldn’t and how to stop the decline of true legato playing.
Beautiful work
Very nice as you as making it look easy at this speed which is hard.
Absolutely divine playing.. Hauser level for sure.😉
